Lesson Plan Design

Training design for Signs and Marking Technician

The International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) is building a training course for new Technicians to become IMSA certified. I worked with IMSA to develop a lesson plan for both the Signs and Markings, and Roadway Lighting courses. Below are a few selected examples from the Signs and Markings development process.

Phase 1: Job Task Analysis & Interviews

Starting from a SME-derived JTA, I held several meetings with SMEs in order to build an understanding of the necessary job requirements for certification.

Phase 2: Workflow Design

Once I had an understanding of the process, I designed dozens of workflows that mapped to each certification task. These workflows were reviewed by SMEs in order to ensure that each task was properly represented.

Phase 3: Lesson Plans

During the final phase, I outlined suggestions for how best to teach each topic. These lesson plans were reviewed by SMEs to ensure that each course fit the necessary requirements and fit into their overall ideas for how the course should be set up. After several rounds of edits, I submitted the final documents which will be used in the next phase to create the courses themselves.
